“Visit Gagarin”: the Most Creative Anniversary Projects

Gagarin: A night club in Norilsk. Source: relax.ngs24.ru

The Cosmonauts Day which had been a holiday only in Russia so far is celebrated worldwide in year 2011 for the first time. The UN General Assembly declared April 12 the International Day of Human Space Flight at the request of Russia. The UN resolution states that this day “will now be annually celebrated worldwide to commemorate the beginning of a space era for mankind.” The anniversary program (exhibitions, conferences, concerts, salutes, meetings with cosmonauts, erection of monuments and a thematic ski-run) is breathtaking; for example, Rub 700 million has been allocated from the Russian budget. But it is more than a matter of funding and magnitude – it is a matter of inventiveness as well: many commemorative actions are the result of their organizers’ ingenuity. Urokiistorii compiled a list of the most notable, creative and absurd projects.

Where 1. Smolensk oblast schools
What The first cosmonaut’s area
A portrait of Yuri Gagarin was to be put up in every oblast school at the initiative of the regional office of the United Russia party. The procedure of choosing the portrait (but not the decision as to whether or not to put it up) was democratic: voting for the best portrait (photo) was held on the party’s website. In September 2010 the oblast schools received Gagarin’s portraits.
Quote
“We bought more than 500 portraits of Yuri Alexeyevich Gagarin for “Gagarin’s Start” project initiated by the United Russia party. We delivered them today to all schools in Smolensk oblast, so that every school would have the first cosmonaut’s area and every school student could read his biography and about his heroic deed. It is very important for our young citizens to know about, and be proud of, our famous countryman’s heroic deed <…> I hope we will celebrate this holiday on a particularly large scale so that Russia’s guests, not just Smolensk oblast people, could recall those landmark historical days when Gagarin circled the globe and when his name became known to the world.”

Sergei Antufiev, Governor of Smolensk oblast

Where 2. Rospatent [Russian Federal Service for Intellectual Property, Patents and Trademarks], Moscow
What Registration of trademark “Gagarin”
Yuri Gagarin’s youngest daughter Galina is in the process of registering brand “Yuri Alexeyevich Gagarin” in her name (request for registration of the trademark was filed with Rospatent on January 26). Gagarin’s relatives explain that they try to protect his name from distortions and falsifications but “experts in patents and trademarks estimate the value of “Gagarin” brand at Rub 1 billion; they point out that the first cosmonaut’s name has a huge capitalization capacity in the anniversary year,” wrote Marker business newspaper.
Quote
 “Gagarin was dinking around the world and all women, well you know what, you see … no four-letter words. Now he came to Cameroon, and there was my granny. Gagarin didn’t resist himself, and my granny did not either.”

Mulatto Gena, the main character in Gagarin’s Grandson movie (this phrase was the subject of a court case which was heard in 2007; Gagarin’s daughters won the case. The court agreed that these words were insulting for the cosmonaut and ruled that they must be cut out of the film)

Where 3. Central square in Kiev (Ukraine)
What Record largest puzzle of Yuri Gagarin
The puzzle was assembled within 20 minutes by 15 people wearing space suits. It consisted of 265 plastic pieces and took almost 25 square meters (the puzzle was registered in the National Register of Records of Ukraine). In addition, the participants put together smaller puzzles with the images of Konstantin Tsiolkovsky and Sergey Korolev.
Quote

After Kiev the puzzle is expected to be taken to 22 regional centers of Ukraine where there is a street named after Gagarin, and later to Russia. Currently, there are negotiations with the city authorities on the placement of the image. After that the puzzle will remain in Zaporozhie, to attract the Euro 2012 tourists.”

Vladimir Rogov, Chairman of the International St. George Union of Young People

Where 4. Square in Samara
What Statue “Cosmonaut” (looks very much like Kenny from South Park) was unveiled.
The statue is put in Kozlov Square in Samara, next to the museum & exhibition center “Cosmic Samara.” Made of stone, the life-sized monument which is a statue of a cosmonaut in a space suit looks very much like an absurd animated movie character.
Quote

Nowhere in Russia there is anything like our museum & exhibition center “Cosmic Samara.” It displays not only the chronicle of the Russian space exploration but the huge contribution which people of Samara made to the development of this industry. This famous carrier rocket Soyuz is the symbol of their labor. I am sure that the new sculpture image will take a commendable place among the sights of our region.”

Vladimir Artyakov, Governor of Samara oblast

Where 5. Intersection of Turgenev and Gagarin streets in Krasnodar
What Picket against “skyrocketing” prices
The picket was initiated by CPRF as part of the Russia-wide action of protest. Slogans included: “Restore the scientific and technical complex!”, “NO to unrestrained housing & utilities tariff hikes!” and “NO to higher public transport fares!”
Quote
  “Yes to stellar space! No to skyrocketing prices!”

The name of the CPRF action and one of its slogans

Where 6. Fountain next to the City Hall in Brussels (Belgium)
What  Costume for Manneken Pis: a Russian space suit
This action was initiated by the Belgian Federation of Russian-Speaking Organizations with support of the Russian embassy in Belgium. King of the Belgians Albert II and members of the royal family were invited to the ceremony of dressing. The tradition of changing the clothes of Manneken Pis goes back to 1698 when the Governor General of the Spanish Netherlands gave the first costume to the statue. Manneken Pis now has more than 800 costumes that represent various professions, social groups, ethnic groups, literary characters and even historical figures.
Quote

The purpose of this action is to remind the Belgians about the role of Russia in space exploration on the 50th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin’s flight and emphasize the importance of space cooperation between Russia and Belgium and Russia and EU.”

Sergey Petrosov, Executive Secretary of Belgian Federation of Russian-Speaking Organizations

Where 7. Secondary school No. 1, Gagarin (a town in Smolensk oblast)
What Development of a creative individual with well-developed planetary thinking
School No. 1 is a “municipal experimental platform for testing an innovative model.” Its list of curriculum programs includes “Health,” “Rodnichok” [“springlet”], program of additional learning “Man – Earth – Space” and elective courses in natural sciences. Teachers report “the positive dynamics of the quality of knowledge”; the number of students who win gold and silver medals has been increasing.
Quote

The innovative model of this school is targeted at the development of a new generation that has a planetary level of thinking, is capable of achieving social, economic and environmental harmony in the society, and can preserve and disseminate common human values in the globalization environment.”

The goal of development is to create conditions for bringing up a citizen who would have a high level of education, planetary thinking and national self-consciousness and be focused on the development of spiritual and physical values in the present and on keeping the guaranteed potential for mankind in the future.”

Where 8. A field in Saratov oblast
What The place where Gagarin landed as an object of cultural heritage.
The idea to make Gagarin’s landing site an object of cultural heritage that would have the status of a federal-level place of interest belongs to Pavel Ipatov, Governor of Saratov oblast. He sent a respective proposal to the Russian Ministry of Culture. The initiative was approved and supported by the federal ministry and by Rosokhrankultura [Russian cultural watchdog]. More than 40 years ago a monument was erected at Gagarin’s landing site, and now documents should be drafted for the state historical and cultural expert evaluation. The existing national register of cultural heritage (monuments of history and culture) does not have a single site of this kind.
Quote

The following items have been donated and delivered to Saratov free of charge: two individual cosmonaut cradles (spacemen chairs); body boat Neva-KB; “Penguin” cosmonaut loading suit; “Forel” hydrosuit; and the main object of this collection — the body of “Foton” descent module which was provided by the Central Design Bureau “Progress” (Samara). In early April these items will be displayed at the landing site and will later be returned to the museums.”

Where 9. Gagarin-related places in Smolensk oblast
What

Tour “You Live in Smolensk Region – Visit Gagarin!”
The tour is a part of the long-term regional targeted program “Celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Yuri Gagarin’s Space Flight” for 2010-2011. The tour is implemented in partnership with the government of Kaluga oblast which is the home region of Konstantin Tsiolkovsky (the forefather of astronautics). The tour agenda was published in the local newspaper:

  • A visit to the first cosmonaut’s bronze bust in Smolensk;
  • A bus tour to Gagarin, capital town of the district where the first cosmonaut spent his childhood; the guide will tell visitors about cosmonauts, pilots and scientists who were born in Smolensk oblast;
  • Visits to local museums. The memorial museum of Gagarin displays the interior of his “childhood house” as it was in 1949. A statue of mother waiting for the son is placed in the yard, and there is an inconspicuous plate in the garden, “Lilac planted by Yuri Gagarin – you can feel the touch of the first cosmonaut’s hands through this plant.” A precise copy of “father’s house” was reconstructed in the house museum of the Gagarins family in Klushino village in 1971 (based on the reminiscences of his family members). There is also a restored dugout in which the Gagarins lived during the Nazi occupation, and their water well (now known as the “Gagarin Well”) has been preserved intact since the 1930s;
  • Visits to two museums that are not directly related to Gagarin, i.e. an art gallery (displaying paintings dedicated to space exploration) and a local studies museum;
Quote

A visit to Gagarin’s home is worthwhile not for school and college students alone but for older people as well – those seasoned with their life experiences and their own reminiscences about the early days of the space era. Yuri Alexeyevich was such a bright person that his museum has a purifying effect on the soul.”

Sergey Mukhanov, Smolenskaya Gazeta

Where 10. Building of the former Vulkan plant, St. Petersburg
What A memorial plaque to fitter Gagarin.
A memorial plaque to trainee student Gagarin was put up in Petrogradskaya Storona district, on a building of former Vulkan plant. The would-be cosmonaut took his on-the-job training here after graduation from Saratov Industrial Technical School, when he did not have deep interest in aviation. The building at this address now “accommodates a Russian corporation which uses space technologies for producing equipment for satellite TV.”
Quote

Yuri Gagarin, the first cosmonaut on the planet, took his on-the-job training here at Vulkan Plant.”

 Legend on the plaque

Where 11. Bookstores, UK
What An anti-soviet comic book about Gagarin
A 64-page book “Yuri’s Day: A Road to the Stars” describes how Gagarin gradually became disappointed with the “soviet system which had bred him.” History in the comic begins long before Gagarin’s flight – in late 1930s when designer Sergei Korolev was put to a Kolyma camp. The Russian press reviews point to historical inconsistencies (“As they put it, the Nazi troops entered Klushino (the village where Yuri Gagarin was born) as early as in June 1941 but it happened only in November”) and criticize the political bias of the comic
Quote

Yuri Alexeyevich Gagarin, the first man who made a space flight, is known to most of us as a vague image in a metal helmet. We who live in the world outside Russia ha s vague idea of what happened to him after his historical flight.”

 Authors: Andrew King, Piers Bizony and Peter Hodkinson

Where 12. Kuibyshev Square in Samara (“the biggest square in Europe”)
What 3,000 students lined up to send a “Samara Cosmos 50” message to the stars
About 3,000 students in scarves and headdresses bearing the logos of the holiday came out to the square and lined up forming an inscription “Samara-Cosmos-50. The photo of this image was taken by GeoEye-1 satellite and transmitted through Samara Center of Space Monitoring. Photos were also taken from a helicopter that hovered above the square, and the image was broadcast on video screens. The last piece of this action was a concert “Space Rock Exercise” in which local and guest performers took part.
Quote

I like to dream. And when there is a chance to look up into the skies, I love to look into the night sky.”

 Alina Savinova, student of Samara State Institute of Architecture and Construction, participant in the action
